Arc and acetylene weld, braze and cut a widely diversified range of
maintenance repairs. Determine current and voltage settings,
electrode type and size for arc welding, select tips and vary flame
in acetylene welding. Weld various types of production equipment in
making repairs, weld pipe, fabricate steel and boiler plate parts
and sections for production use; fuse various grades of hard facing
materials to production parts; braze castings, tools, machine, and
equipment parts with various metals according to conditions
required. Harden, temper and anneal high speed, alloy steels and
cast iron; for use in tools or production, maintenance and repair
parts. Plan and layout details and development of sheet metal and
boiler plate work in the fabrication of new construction and
maintenance, including tanks, machine guards, ventilation ducts,
metal jigs, fixtures, etc. Cut or sheer, band, roll and form
variously shaped parts, using variety of sheet metal working and
gas welding equipment. Perform other duties as assigned.
COMPLEXITY AND JUDGMENT
May specialize in more skilled practices or any work outlined. May
decide on relative effectiveness of arc and acetylene welding for
some jobs. Exercise considerable judgment in the heat treating of
various metals for specific use. Planning and layout of sheet metal
work for irregularly shaped parts requires making decisions on
methods to be used to obtain desired shapes.
Depending on experience, perform routine work applying principles
of welding, elementary heat treating and sheet metal working in
performance of maintenance, repair, and production work.
Understand basic to complicated drawings and specifications, shop
arithmetic, and use of scales, protractors, squares, precision
measuring instruments. Knowledge of arc and gas welding principles
and methods, fusion of various metals and alloys, elementary heat
treating and shop metallurgy. Training generally equivalent to
partial high school plus about 2-3 years of apprenticeship or trade
Depending on level, two to four years in welding.
Considerable initiative and responsibility for planning details of
procedure, including heat, pressure, strength of welds, degrees of
hardness and wear resistance qualities in heat treating various
metals and in a wide application of principles of sheet metal
working. Unusual problems should be referred to supervisor.
Moderately heavy work in making repairs. Distribution of all work
over various jobs; however, generally involves only moderate
effort. Works in standing position; at times requires frequent
lifting and handling of medium castings. Chain hoists available for
lifting heavy work. Some heavy lifting, push/pulling on occasion.
Some work must be performed in an awkward position.
Employees working in this position are required to frequently walk
or hear. The employee is required to use hands to finger, handle or
feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb
or balance, stoop kneel, crouch or crawl.
The employee must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to
fifty (50) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job
include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral
vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Some conditions are extremely noisy with exposure to dust, flying
chips, heat and some fumes. Some exposure to outside weather
conditions. Required to wear a welding mask.
Working in the foundry environment subject to temperatures of heat
and cold depending on the season. Required PPE includes, but is not
limited to, steel toe shoes, hearing protection, eye protection,
and necessary protective mask or hood.
