We are currently hiring for our next Sr. Packaging Engineer- Innovation in Breinigsville, PA.

The Sr. Packaging Engineer - Innovation will be responsible for

  1. Identifying, developing, and commercializing innovative new packaging materials, technology, and systems that bring competitive, consumer, or cost advantage to Boston Beer.

  2. Serving as the primary conduit between Engineering and the Innovation and Brand Development teams and for packaging related to the introduction of new products, materials, package designs, and structures not currently within Boston Beer portfolio, As a key member of NPD cross-functional team they will represent Engineering and Supply Chain relative to packaging materials and packaging equipment systems.

The Sr. Packaging Engineer - Innovation will work cross functionally with Brand Development, Innovation & Commercialization Team, New Product Development, Process Development, Quality, Procurement, Operations, Breweries, and others to evaluate new product and package concepts for feasibility and operational impact (changeovers, OEE, complexity) to the breweries and then lead the execution of those projects to meet company wide and brewery specific objectives and timelines. This role includes working with Brand Development on conceptual development for new ideas, completing proof of principle testing, and then scaling-up the concept through commercialization while ensuring technical rigor and minimizing disruptions to daily brewery operations. A critical part of this position is to execute technically challenging and complex projects on fast-paced commercial launch schedules. This position reports to the Director of Packaging Engineering & Materials.

What You'll Do:

  • Lead all aspects of packaging development and engineering for multiple assigned projects.
  • Evaluate multiple new product and package concepts driven by Brand Development for feasibility and operational impact (changeovers, OEE, complexity) to the breweries.
  • Develops packaging solutions to achieve Brand goals while mitigating risk and complexity at the brewery.
  • Lead the execution of Brand Driven new product and packaging projects to meet company wide and brewery specific objectives and timelines from concept through commercialization and commissioning at BBC and contract brewing partners.
  • Where appropriate to support new product or technology introduction - responsible for scope definition, capital cost estimates, investment justification (CAPEX preparation), system design, development of engineering and package design specifications, and supervision/management of outside consulting engineering firms, OEM service technicians, and contractors.
  • Manage project installation/construction, start-up, commissioning, and the effective transfer of technology and training to Brewery operating personnel.
  • Ensures BBC safety and compliance standards are adhered to on all projects.
  • Prepare critical path project schedule and coordination with Brand Development and Brewery production scheduling, material suppliers, equipment vendors, outside contractors and brewery personnel to ensure compliance with project scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Develop business case and plan for investment in new initiatives and technologies.
  • Develop best-in-class package development and commercialization processes that achieve Brand Development goals while minimizing distraction to the production breweries.
  • Develop new testing procedures and methods where required as part of development and commercialization.
  • Create and maintain packaging material specifications for all assigned projects
  • Connect and develop relationships with packaging material, equipment suppliers, and other technology partners to ensure Boston Beer is front of mind for new technologies and innovations
  • Remain current and up to date with packaging material and equipment technologies for the beverage and related industries Intellectual curiosity, and following through on said curiosity with strong analytical and problem solving skills; strong cross-functional communication skills
  • 30% travel required, dependent upon work location

What We're Looking For:

  • BS in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or similar degree
  • 6 years progressive leadership experience, preferrable within the Food, Beverage or FMCG industries
  • Proven track record of leading packaging innovation projects from ideation to commercialization
