Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants provide interventions that focus on physical and emotional wellness, health promotion, client safety and facilitate client re-engagement of ADL/IADL skills. The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant serves as a resource person for the interdisciplinary team and the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation department. Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants shall be provided supervision as required by state laws and regulations to Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants by licensed Occupational Therapists. Patients encountered by the Acute Care Physical Therapist may include those with a diagnosis and/or impairments related to pediatric (2 months - 12 years), adolescent (13-17 years), adult (18-65 years) medical conditions.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The Occupational Therapist Assistant must adhere to the Standards of Practice and institutional policy and procedures that govern the conduct of professional activities and are consistent with the American Occupational Therapy Associations' (AOTA) positions, standards, guidelines, policies, procedures, and Code of Ethics. Integrates AOTA documents, legislation, legal, and regulatory issues into practice.
  • Demonstrates general clinical knowledge of Occupational Therapy in the acute care practice setting and provides occupational therapy intervention that is consistent with the results of the clinical evaluation.--
  • The Occupational Therapist Assistant must provide occupational therapy intervention in a technically competent manner that minimizes risk to the patient, self and others by selecting intervention methods that are relevant to the chief complaint, history of the patient and plan of care established by the Acute Care Occupational Therapist.
  • Engages in communication with the Acute Care Occupational Therapist regarding client progress and response to intervention
  • Identify the need for reevaluation based upon achievement of goals, lack of progress, change in patient status, and response to interventions provided.
  • Prioritizes, implements and documents interventions in order to facilitate patient transition to the next level of care in a safe, timely, and effective manner. The Occupational Therapist Assistant must collaborate with the interdisciplinary team as appropriate to provide the highest quality of care to patients/clients.
  • Provides appropriate and timely documentation that is accurate, concise, and timely; within 2 hours of intervention provided.--PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
    Must be able to sit for up to ninety minutes at a time.-- Be able to tolerate standing for thirty to forty-five minutes consecutively. Must be able to use hands/fingers to manipulate dials on machines.-- Must have the ability to lift/move patients up to 300 lbs., push/pull patients weighing up to 300 lbs.-- Must have the ability to frequently stoop/bend, squat, crouch, kneel and reach above shoulder level. Must be capable of tactile sensation as it relates to feeling for muscle spasms, texture and skin temperature.-- Must have the ability to hear as it relates to normal conversation and ability to hear call bells.-- Must be capable of seeing as it relates to general vision, depth perception, and peripheral vision.
    EDUCATION:
    Associate's Degree required. Successful completion of course work and required clinical affiliations from an accredited occupational therapist assistant educational program.Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant License in the state as determined by the job location.CPR certification required.
    TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:--
    Previous experience in a clinical setting preferred.
