Job Description and QualificationsThe TAR (turn-around) Lead Project Manager is accountable for the overall execution of all major projects implemented during plant turn-around within the America's Industrial Gases hydrogen business. The TAR Lead PM will supervise a team of 3-4 project managers that are responsible for carrying out capital projects at operating Air Products' production facilities throughout North America. Facilities are primarily located in TX, LA, and CA., with TARs typically in the range of $10-40MM each. PM leadership includes the complete project cycle from development through field execution.

The TAR team is focused on leading major plant expansions, upgrades, and large-scale maintenance activities that are implemented during 24x7 outages lasting 20-40 days. These projects include the project management of Air Products or 3rd party engineering companies, procurement, and field execution resources. The primary objective is to seamlessly integrate into the Operations and Maintenance teams during major outages and complete the scope within budget and schedule requirements. This position is responsible for major projects and does not typically manage routine maintenance or tasks.

The ability to lead a cross-function team during the development, planning, and execution of an outage is essential to being successful in this role. This specifically includes the ability to interact with all levels of the organization from business managers, engineers, procurement, and operations. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable in an office or plant environment. Projects are implemented applying global engineering and fabrication capabilities, necessitating a strong cross-cultural competency.
Principal accountabilities:

  • Maintain a safe work environment and support corporate and organizational safety goals in the office, suppliers, and fabrication and field sites.
  • Provide leadership to the TAR team and oversee all project execution and
  • Serves as the primary interface between GEMTE and Operations.
  • Ensure Risk Management procedures are followed, and any issues resolved.
  • During development, work with Operations to define the scope of work. This may include the investigation of existing equipment operating deficiencies, developing new solutions with Engineering, as well as evaluating multiple options.
  • Accountability encompasses everything necessary to meet the outage scope and includes engineering, design, equipment procurement, construction procurement, construction management, plant commissioning and start-up, environmental permitting, etc.
  • Following the definition of scope, establishes strategies for execution, procurement, construction, and start-up. Works with AP cost estimating and project controls resources to estimate cost and schedule for funding authorization.
  • Oversight, support and direction of all project execution activities, including overall cost, schedule, and plant performance related to the project assigned.
  • Overall management of all aspects affiliated to the project performed by Air Products, including work done within engineering (Machinery, Electrical, Civil/Structural, etc.) and supporting organizations such as Procurement, Safety, Quality, etc.)
  • Develop and lead an impactful project team that includes the core Air Products' project members, other Air Products functions, external partners, vendors, equipment vendors, and possibly, customer representatives.
  • Accountability for review of outstanding execution strategies and decision-making processes to address these situations. Lead the internal and/or external problem-solving vital to arrive at appropriate decisions.
  • Member of the AP "BUILD" team working with the customers throughout the term of the project.
  • Travel: The successful candidate will be encouraged to be present at outages in support of TAR PMs as required. Some level of occasional travel to engineering offices and plant sites will also be required.
  • This position may be located at either our Houston, TX or Allentown, PA office. The opportunity to balance some work from home is possible.Qualifications:
    • Project management skills, knowledge, and 10+ years of demonstrated experience in capital project execution
    • 10+ years' experience in maintenance and/or engineering subject areas, preferably with experience in industrial outages, hydrogen manufacturing, refineries, or other industry (concurrent experience is acceptable)
    • Outstanding leadership, communication and influencing skills
    • Strong interpersonal and planning skills
    • unwillingness to compromise on worker safety and regulatory compliance requirements
    • Ability to read and understand P&IDs, piping isometrics, fixed equipment design packages, and specifications.
    • Proficient in the use of computers and business software, including Microsoft (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook) and familiarity with Primavera P6 and/or MS Project
    • Passport and TWIC; or ability to acquire
    • Ability to pass criminal background checks and drug testing requirements
    • BS in engineering or construction is preferred
